Royal Mail Group (SHE) Safety Flash FY24 006 – Heavy Duty Rubber Swing Door Detachments:

Overview: 

Royal Mail Group’s Safety Team have issued RMG SHE Safety Flash FY24 006 following a series of incidents in different Mail Centres and Delivery Offices with ‘heavy duty rubber swing doors’ which have come detached due to lose hinges causing the doors to fall from the fittings, risking injury to staff entering or exiting the building.

Background and Description of Incidents:

There have been several similar incidents in different Offices where the heavy-duty rubber swing doors have come loose from their hinges and detached, resulting in the door falling and striking employees passing through the doors in most cases whilst pushing a York Container.

Impact/Injury: 

Heavy falling doors hitting passing employees.

Key Messages and Learning Points:

The workforce is requested to report any faults, defects, concerns to their line manager.

PiCs/Plant Managers/COMs/Managers Actions: 

• Issue and brief staff on the attached ‘Safety Flash’ FY24 006 to all staff who use these doors.
• Ensure all employees report any obvious faulty doors whilst using them.
• Ensure these doors are used as intended to reduce the likelihood of any damage, i.e., do not tie back or hold open with equipment.
• Managers to check/inspect the doors in line with the bi-monthly inspection regime, looking for wear and tear that is resulting in the door not operating correctly or has a fault such as a loose hinge or evidence of corrosion.
• All defects with the doors to be immediately reported to RM Property and Facilities on 0333 005 0312.

CWU ASR/WSR Action: 

• Please ensure that this Safety Flash is communicated to all members and managers.
• Check these doors on Safety Inspections and report all faults.
