Core Education & Training Programme (RESIDENTIAL) 2017/18

Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to report that the National Executive Council has endorsed the attached CWU Education & Training Programme for residential training courses to be held at Alvescot Lodge during the Academic Year 2017/2018.
The core programme can be supplemented by any courses or workshops which are requested through the Education & Training Department via Regional and Regional Sub-Committees, Regional Organising Committee and Branches.
If assistance in developing a forward looking training plan is required, please also contact the CWU Education & Training Dept. in the normal way.
It is important to note that to remain consistent within the CWU, the following courses have been updated and split as “Part 1 & 2”. 
Applications via the Branch Secretary should be submitted to Maxine Todd (CWU Course Administrator) and both weeks 1 & 2 (where applicable) should be applied for at the same time. 
“COURSE 1 and COURSE 2” simply denotes parts 1 and 2 of the same course being run at different times:

• Advanced Skills

• Equal Rights in the CWU

• Introduction to Health & Safety

LTB 208/2017 – Education & Training Department at Annual Conference 2017

Business and Public Sector and Global Services Consultative Committee – 11 May 2017
As you will be aware, the Business and Public Sector and Global Services NT’s will merge to form a single NT from the 1st May 2017. It has been decided that activities in both Lines of Business will be discussed at a single Consultative Committee and the first such meeting will take place on 11 May 2017 in Conference Room 2 at CWU HQ.
Representation will be on the basis of one delegate per Branch with members in BT Business and Public Sector and/or Global Services. Branches should also note that they will be responsible for the costs incurred by their delegates.

Workers’ Memorial Day 2017 – CWU Special Posters: “Good Health And Safety For All Workers Whoever They Are”

Dear Colleagues,
As in previous years and as previously reported, the Health, Safety and Environment Department has produced special Workers’ Memorial Day Posters for distribution to branches, safety representatives and regional health and safety forums. The posters will also be available and displayed at CWU Annual Conference. 
Workers’ Memorial Day is held on 28 April every year. All over the world workers and their representatives conduct events, demonstrations, vigils and a whole host of other activities to mark the day.
Please find attached a pdf version of the CWU 2017 Workers’ Memorial Day poster which can be downloaded and printed off as required by branches. Hard copies have also been distributed to Branches.
Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don’t die of mystery ailments, or in tragic “accidents”. They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn’t that important a priority. Workers’ Memorial Day (WMD) commemorates those workers. The day is also intended to serve as a rallying cry to “remember the dead, but fight for the living”.
In 2017 International Workers Memorial Day will have the theme “Good Health And Safety For All Workers Whoever They Are” and will focus on inequalities in occupational health and the role unions play in narrowing the inequalities gap.
Across the world we are seeing growing attacks on health and safety protection, including in Britain where the Government has removed protection from millions of self-employed workers, and across Europe where the European Commission are pursuing a dangerous de-regulatory strategy. However, strong laws are not enough, if they are not going to be enforced. That is why we need proper inspections and enforcement action against those who break the laws. Here in the UK the number of inspections has fallen dramatically in the past five years, however in many other countries enforcement has always been non-existent. That is why we also need strong unions. Unionised workplaces are safer, yet the Government is trying to stop unions protecting the health and safety of their members by restricting the right of health and safety representatives to take time off to keep the workplace safer, and also trying to reduce our right to strike when things go wrong.

LTB 202/17 – ELECTION OF NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE POSITIONS

CWU Annual Conference – New Delegates Briefing – Saturday 22nd April 2017
This is to advise that there will be the usual new delegates briefing session taking place on Saturday 22nd April 2017 at 6.00 pm in the Windsor Hall at the Bournemouth International Centre.
The event will be hosted by the President, Beryl Shepherd and Jane Loftus, Vice President. The aim is to give those delegates who are new to conference the opportunity to understand how conference works and to ask any questions they may have. There will also be the opportunity to stand at the rostrum and speak into the microphone to help delegates feel more confident about speaking on a motion.
Branches are therefore asked to encourage new and young delegates to attend this session – it should last no longer than 30 minutes.

The Communications department will be using a number of social media and video platforms at Conference this year.

The department is in the process of drawing together a full and detailed communications strategy for the union. This will clearly include how we can add to and improve on the way our branches engage with members. 
 
With this in mind, we will be giving Branches the opportunity to meet with members of the Communications Department at Conference this year.
