2019 Dispute Relating to Honouring and Deploying the Four Pillars of Security & Pay/Guiding Principles National Agreement between the CWU and RMG

Branches will be aware that the External Mediator, Professor Roy Lewis was provided with the CWU submission pack on Tuesday afternoon.

We know that all Branches and Field Officials are well versed in the specific issues of dispute as are our members.

The gate meetings that are being held are an inspiration to us all and I would like to thank everyone who has made the effort to hold these events.

Please see attached further material that we would ask you to circulate which reiterates the Union’s specific demands in this dispute. The poster should be used for noticeboards and we would encourage every unit to ensure this is displayed. The poster can also be handed out at gate meetings and used for photo opportunities and social media.

We are meeting Royal Mail Group at External Mediation today and will report developments as they occur.

Any enquiries in relation to the content of this LTB should be addressed to the DGS(P) Department.

Yours sincerely,

Public Health England (PHE) New Mental Health Campaign “Every Mind Matters” – Launches on 7th October 2019

Public Health England (PHE) New Mental Health Campaign “Every Mind Matters” – Launches on 7th October 2019:

PHE’s major new Mental Health Campaign, “Every Mind Matters” will be launched on 7th October 2019.

The plans is for a huge amount of media coverage with the launch going out across a collection of some of England’s biggest TV channels, as well as radio, national newspapers and social media.

The launch will be supported by a number of celebrities, companies, organisations and big brands who are committed to supporting and promoting the campaign through their own communication channels.

PHE have stated that the campaign is fully supported by NHS England and will be NHS branded and clinically assured.‎ The NHS‎ and their public-sector partners will also be fully involved and they are planning to have trusted conversations with the public as well as highlighting how their services can aid a person’s mental health and wellbeing.

Campaign Aims

PHE say that the campaign aims are to support everyone to feel more confident in taking action to take care of their mental health and wellbeing – promoting a range of self-care actions to promote good mental health and tackle common problems, as well as signposting wider resources and services for those in greater need.

Through use of the campaign’s content and navigation tool, PHE’s aim is for 1 million members of the adult population in England to be better informed and equipped to look after their own mental health and to support others.

Campaign Tool and Content

The campaign offers free, NHS-approved mental health resources, via the new “One You” Website, which helps build understanding of mental health and what individuals can do to improve and manage how they are feeling.

The navigation tool asks users a few questions to identify the type of issues they are facing. This allows users to generate a tailored self-care action plan to support their mental health and wellbeing.

For those who want to learn more about common problems there are more in-depth modules on stress, sleeplessness, anxiety and low mood.

There will also be information on Trauma, OCD, panic and social anxiety – although these will not be promoted via the campaign.

Each module contains information on what can cause changes in people’s mental health, possible signs to look out for, advice on things you can do and importantly, explain what’s OK and when people should seek further support, including links to IAPT. (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies IAPT programme began in 2008 and treats adult anxiety and depression. It’s a widely recognised talking therapy. One million people use IAPT services every year to help overcome their depression and anxiety and better manage their mental health.)

Through the new ‘Every Mind Matters Campaign’ advice will also be available for those who want to support others who are struggling with their mental health.

The new campaign builds on the achievements of anti-stigma-focussed mental health campaigns by offering simple advice for self-care and encourages individuals to take action. It’s not a treatment service and has been designed to complement wider services including IAPT, with appropriate signposting for those who would benefit from additional support.

Kashmir crisis

Kashmir crisis

The purpose of this LTB is to highlight to branches the ongoing crisis in Indian-administered Kashmir and the plight of people there who are currently subject to a communication blackout, while a number of political leaders have been imprisoned. The issue was debated at the September NEC and we are aware that a number of CWU members feel strongly about it and may have friends and relatives who have been affected.

There has been a decades long stalemate between India and Pakistan over Kashmir and years of conflict in Indian-administered Kashmir. At the start of August, India’s Government removed the special status for Indian-administered Kashmir, that gave it significant autonomy under its constitution, and cut off telephone lines and the internet while sending in tens of thousands of troops and imposing a curfew and a media-blackout.

The CWU has a strong record of international work and in particular we are concerned about reports from Amnesty International of food and medical shortages together with gross human rights abuses by security forces. Following the debate at the NEC it was agreed that we would issue this LTB to raise awareness of the situation among our members and work with like-minded organisations and MPs to put pressure on the UK and Indian governments to alleviate the suffering of those affected, which we will be doing over the coming weeks.

As an affiliate of Amnesty International, we would encourage members to sign the petition on its website urging, the Indian government to lift the communications blackout and allow unconditional access for the media, which is available here amnesty.org.uk/actions/lift-communications-lockdown-kashmir. We would also encourage members to lobby their local MP to raise it with the UK government.

Any queries on the contents of this LTB should be addressed to gsoffice@cwu.org and further work on this will be reported in due course.

Yours sincerely

The Voice – relaunch and non-plastic wrapping

The Voice – relaunch and non-plastic wrapping

Early next week the new edition of The Voice will land at member’s home addresses. We have worked on a complete re-brand and moved the focus away from outdated news to a features led publication which showcases the best of our industrial, political equality and education work and much more. We are now confident that The Voice compliments and enhances our other communications channels.

We will make further improvements in issue two including adding four additional pages and changing the paper on which the magazine is printed.

We ask branches to give suitable publicity the changes in your local communications.

In addition to the magazine we have also taken the decision to cease the use of plastic wrapping and will now be using a 100% compostable material. This is line with the environmental strategy the union is developing. We do not feel continuing to produce 200,000 copies of The Voice wrapped in plastic was acceptable. This small but significant change is introduced as part of our development of a much wider environmental strategy that we are in the process of designing. As we develop that approach the opportunity will be given for input from across the Union. Keep a look out for further information on this issue in the coming months.

Any feedback on The Voice should be directed to Marcia Murray mmurray@cwu.org
