Royal Mail Safety Alert – Peugeot Expert Van – Side Door Detachments

Royal Mail Safety Alert – Peugeot Expert Van – Side Door Detachments

To: All Branches

Dear Colleagues,

There have been a growing number of incidents and reports of Peugeot Expert Van side doors detaching from the small panel vans whilst side doors are being operated whereby the top mounting arm comes out of the runner.

The guidance now being briefed out to all drivers is as follows:-

  1. When opening and closing the side load door on new shape Peugeot Expert vans ensure the side door is opened and closed without using excessive force which can otherwise cause door failure.
  2. Drivers must not use a “throwing” action when opening and closing the door and instead the door should be held by the handle throughout its operation which prevents the door being ‘thrown’ against its stop.
  3. If excessive force is used the door can detach from the top runner channel during use.
  4. Royal Mail Fleet is reviewing the issue with the vehicle manufacturer to establish a modification campaign. In summary, drivers must not use a “throwing” or “slamming” action to open and close the door. Ensure the door is opened and closed without using excessive force as damage can occur. Drivers should remain holding the handle throughout the entire sliding travel ensuring the door is opened fully to engage the end of travel catch.Please ensure the message gets to all your driver members, operating this LCV type small van.

Yours sincerely

Dave Joyce

REMINDER AND FINAL CALL: Ken McKenzie Award for Lifelong Learning 2018

Branches will be aware of the policy adopted at General Conference 2010 to present the “Ken McKenzie Award for Lifelong Learning” which is presented to a Union Learning Representative (ULR) or group of ULRs who have made a significant contribution to lifelong learning within the CWU. The award is presented each year at our CWU ULR National Networking Event. This year will follow tradition and be part of the agenda at this year’s event scheduled to be held in Bournemouth over two days on the 21st and 22ndNovember 2018.

Last year the accolade was awarded jointly to Christine Carruthers (Tyne & Wear Clerical), Geoff Hodge (Somerset, Devon & Cornwall), and Scott Taylor (Glasgow & District Amal) and as usual we received a good number of nominations of a very high quality.

I am now inviting applications for the 2018 Annual Ken McKenzie award for lifelong learning. The award will be made in recognition of exceptional achievements and contributions to lifelong learning and training by a CWU ULR or a group of CWU ULRs.

Nominations can be made by Branches, Regional Learning Committees or Regional Committees via letter or email to my Department.

Nominations should include a précis of the nominated ULR or group of ULRs endeavours and achievements and be sent to:

Michelle Simpson, Education and Training Department, CWU, 150 The Broadway, Wimbledon, London, SW19 1RX or email learn@cwu.org

The closing date for nominations will be FRIDAY 26THOCTOBER 2018.

Terry Pullinger on the Share Price

Terry Pullinger on the Share Price

Commenting on this story, CWUs Deputy General Secretary (Postal), Terry Pullinger, said:

“We never agreed with the privatisation of Royal Mail or the ‘free’ shares that were given to our members.

These schemes are considered a good idea based on the theory that they give workers a say in the running of the organisation and a personal interest in its success.

When workers have absolutely no say in advanced predictions on profit – which may well be overly – optimistic, the share is worth less the moment reality kicks in.

Figures lie and liars figure and this is yet another demonstration of the fact that our people’s post is under constant threat.

The service is judged by share price and unrealistic targets when its success should be measured by the delivery of first-class connectivity and service to the communities and business of this country.

It’s high time that we ended the privatisation agenda and renationalised the service, taking the focus away from profiteering and back to a publicly owned postal service that is the envy of the world.”

Royal Mail Group Announcement – Merger of Royal Mail Group SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) Team and Royal Mail Group Property Risk, Compliance and Assurance Team:

To: All Branches

Dear Colleagues,

The Health, Safety and Environment Department has been formally informed today by Dr. Shaun Davis Royal Mail Group‎ Global Director of Safety, Health,‎ Wellbeing and Sustainability that he and Martin Gafsen Director of Royal Mail Property and Facilities Solutions (and Romec Limited),‎ had concluded a review of the activities carried out in RM Group SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) and those carried out in the RM Group Property Risk, Compliance and Assurance, which had identified opportunities for improvements relating to operational effectiveness, delivery of efficiencies and improved synergies across both teams.

Following the review it has been decided that these two teams will merge under Shaun Davis’s leadership providing both Dr. Davis and Martin Gafsen with improved operational consistency, oversight and alignment on safety, health, environment and property safety related matters.

WRAP’ (Walk Risk Assessment Platform) – Technical Fixes Guide

WRAP’ (Walk Risk Assessment Platform) – Technical Fixes Guide:

To: All Branches

Dear Colleagues,

It is important that Delivery Offices are compliant with their Walk Risk Assessment Platform (WRAP) database in order to ensure that all safety hazards on each delivery round, including problem dogs are logged, along with the appropriate risk controls information which is then readily available to staff performing the round in question.

Gary Millward Royal Mail Group Technical Safety, Health and Environment Systems Manager ‎has advised all Delivery Managers and PiCs that if they have a technical problem with ‘WRAP’ they should refer to the ‘Technical Fixes Guide’ which can be found on the SHE Knowledge Database under the ‘Popular Apps’ section of the Royal Mail Intranet. If any further assistance is needed they should contact their RM SHE Advisor to discuss the issues.

A copy of the ‘WRAP Technical Fixes Guide’‎ is attached for ASRs/WSRs information.

For any Delivery Office Managers having issues with ‘WRAP’ including Animal ID corruption, hills/stairs issues, etc., – a panel of trained RM SHE Advisors are available to assist. These are:-

* John English

* Kerry Whiteford

* Simon Handford

* Trevor Hamilton

They should be e-mailed with a copy of the ‘WRAP’ file with a description of the issue/problem.

A list of common problems are dealt with in the attached guide.

Yours sincerely
