RMG – Unilateral Decision to Cease Paper Pay Slips
RMG – Unilateral Decision to Cease Paper Pay Slips
Following correspondence from a number of Branches and Divisions, it became clear RMG had taken a decision to cease the use of paper pay-slips. This was implemented on 26th April without any consultation and will undoubtedly have an impact on those members who do not have access to online facilities.
Given that the national Business Recovery, Transformation and Growth Agreement mentions joint working on numerous occasions, it is obviously important the that company is held to account where a contrary approach has been adopted.
As a result, on 27th April 2023 I wrote the letter attached at Appendix 1 to the Chief People Officer, raising our concern regarding the manner in which this change had been implemented and in particular to highlight concerns about the timing. A response was received that is attached at Appendix 2.
The contents of this are disappointing but not unexpected, given that 85% of the RMG workforce are already using the online ‘People App’. Branches will recall that when the ability to access pay slips through the ‘People App’ was first introduced, the business stated that this would not be a mandatory requirement however this business decision now means the remaining 15% will be impacted by this diktat.
However, there will still be the ability to request a paper copy although this has been described as an absolute exception. That said, the Union do not accept that this only applies to those with medical issues as there will also be members who have no access to the relevant digital information.
Further correspondence has been sent to the company making the above points as well as to ascertain what sort of alternative means will be made available.
Finally, it is important that those who have medical conditions or do not have either online or digital access, raise their cases locally with the appropriate manager and are given support by their Union Reps.
Yours sincerely

RMG/CWU Business Recovery, Transformation and Growth Agreement – Lord Falconer Review of Conduct Cases (Appendix 7)
RMG/CWU Business Recovery, Transformation and Growth Agreement – Lord Falconer Review of Conduct Cases (Appendix 7)
Further to LTB 123/23 dated 18th May, Branches are advised we have now submitted 2 further batches of consent forms to RMG totalling 126 to date. Branches will have received an email receipt via independent-review@cwu.orgfor each consent form submitted. Please contact Rob Wotherspoon, Postal Executive, via the dedicated email address if the acknowledgement has not been received. In line with the words of Appendix 7, “The Review will cover: Individual cases of both CWU members and CWU representatives referred to it by the union”. To be clear, the union will be reviewing all casefiles received along with any documentation provided by RMG and submitting all appropriate cases to the Independent Review and the submissions will be totally at the discretion of the union, not RMG.
Suspended Members/Representatives – Consent Forms Required
Lord Falconer has directed that Consent forms have to be submitted by this Friday, 26th May; however, we expect there to be some legitimate exceptions to this, such as where conduct decisions have not been notified to individuals along with those members who are still suspended (currently believed to be 37 people) and are therefore yet to face disciplinary charges. With regard to the latter, we will be writing directly to all Branches who have suspended members/Reps, asking them to provide a separateconsent form on the basis there is the potential that the suspension may ultimately lead to a disciplinary penalty. The Consent forms need to be sent into the dedicated email address: independent-review@cwu.org
Branches are reminded to give the Independent Review their fullest attention, particularly the provision of all case papers to the dedicated email address.
Yours sincerely

RECRUITMENT & ORGANISING STRATEGY CONSULTATION
RECRUITMENT & ORGANISING STRATEGY CONSULTATION
Please find attached a summary of the consultation results and proposed recommendations arising from the Recruitment & Organising Strategy Consultation which took place last year.
The NEC has endorsed a number of recommendations arising from the consultation as detailed in the attached summary specifically:
- Lead Branches – identify a number of branches in each region to lead on recruitment and representation outside the union’s traditional base; to be identified by consensus in discussion with branches and regional secretaries
- Establishment of Regional Working Groups – to share resources and best practices; provide training opportunities to fit the needs of the region; give newly unionising workers an active role in organising and recruitment work and allow UTAW members to become actively involved in the region
- Establishment of National Organising Network – to bring together lead branches, newly organised workers and the UTAW branch to enable a whole union approach to recruitment and organising outside our traditional “core”
It is the intention of the NEC to bring forward appropriate rule changes to deliver the strategy outlined in the document for consideration at Annual Conference.
Any enquiries regarding this LTB should be addressed to the Head of Recruitment & Organising by email to rodept@cwu.org.
Yours sincerely

ROYAL MAIL: EX-POST OFFICE “SAFENET” MEMBERS WORKING IN ROYAL MAIL – CONSOLIDATED PAY INCREASE OF 9%
ROYAL MAIL: EX-POST OFFICE “SAFENET” MEMBERS WORKING IN ROYAL MAIL – CONSOLIDATED PAY INCREASE OF 9%
Branches will recall we have a number of members who were redeployed from Post Office “Safenet” duties back into the Royal Mail operation under MTSF in 2009.
Following positive discussions with Royal Mail management, we can now confirm that these ex-“Safenet” members will receive the Post Office pay increase of 9% and lump sum payments as per the pay agreement endorsed by Post Office members in April 2023 covering the three years 2021/22, 2022/23 & 2023/24.
The following Joint Statement has been agreed with Royal Mail:
Joint Statement between Royal Mail and the CWU regarding Pay for ex-Post Office ‘SafeNet’ employees working in Royal Mail
Following joint discussions Royal Mail and CWU confirm that all ex-Post Office ‘SafeNet’ employees working within Royal Mail will receive the Post Office pay increase outlined below covering the three years 2021/22, 2022/23 & 2023/24.
Key Features of the Pay Agreement are:
9% consolidated pay increase on base pay from 3rd April 2023 (1st April for monthly paid).
- A £650 one-off lump sum applied to all CWU colleagues currently earning less than £24,000 and for all others a £500 one-off lump sum. These payments will be made in full for all and not prorated.
- Further lump sums ranging between £1,325-£2,500 dependent upon pay level, and additional one off payments for London-based employees. Both these lump sums are prorated.
- Royal Mail HR Services are currently processing the pay uplift and this will be implemented in May salaries for monthly paid and Friday 26th May for weekly paid employees, including all back pay.
We wish to thank people for their patience whilst we have been clarifying these matters.
