Branch Political Officers Report for Branch Committee Meeting

Labour Party Conference

In his speech to conference yesterday 25th September Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell pledged to bring back in house all existing PFI contacts, he also vowed to press ahead with the nationalisation of Royal Mail, Railways, Water and Energy.

He also vowed that a real living wage of £10 per hour along with pay ratios at the top of business, Labour will also address the gender pay gap which still leaves women’s wages 14% behind men.

Fiona Onasayna Peterborough MP

Fiona now has an office in the City Centre, I met her on Friday 15th September to discuss the CWU Four Pillars Campaign.

Fiona is 100% behind the campaign and has written to Moya Green on behalf of the branch asking a wide range of questions, she was happy to pose for photos which we have both shared on social media.

Fiona has been hospitalised and ordered to rest for a full week after being taken ill in Westminster, I’m happy to report that she is on the road to recovery and is well enough to attend the Labour Party Conference this week.

Peterborough City Council By Elections

As reported in my report to the July meeting two By Elections had been triggered one in Park Ward and one in Eye, Thorney and Newborough, Labours Shaz Narwaz won in Park Ward, Unfortunately Labours Dr Christian Defoe was unsuccessful in Eye, Thorney but the big positive is he increased the Labour vote by 15%.

The Conservative victory gives the Tories back control of the City Council.

Shaz Narwaz’s win in Park keeps Labour with 15 seats this could increase to 16 as Darren Fower Lib Dem has defected to Labour (pending membership ratification)

East of England Labour Party Regional Board

The Board met on Saturday 2nd September in Harlow, unfortunately I was unable to attend due to being on CWU business, please find attached a report that was circulated by the delegation from Chelmsford CLP to its members.

CWU Eastern Region Political Committee

The last meeting was held on Friday 8th September, this was the first meeting of the committee since the General Election, the meeting discussed the election results and were pleased with the increase in MP’s for the Region was 4 now 7.

The Committee set the delegation for the East of England Labour Conference which is being held in Huntingdon Friday 17th – Sunday 19th November, we are looking to submit a motion on the Four Pillars campaign.

Peterborough Constituency Labour Party

The CLP is mourning the loss of Liz Moon, Liz was a stalwart of the CLP holding many positions over the years, she was a friend to everyone always there at the end of the telephone if you needed advice.

Liz’s funeral was held last Thursday I attended on behalf of the branch.

The CLP Executive meets this week, I will circulate the report next week.

Huntingdon CLP  

The CLP held its AGM on Monday 17th July, I’m pleased to announce that Darrell Herd CWU Representative at St Neots was elected to the role of TULO Officer, the CLP are advertising for candidates for the May 2018 council elections in Huntingdonshire.

The next meeting of the CLP will take place on Monday 16th October

South Holland & The Deepings CLP

The next CLP meeting is due to take place on Thursday 28th September at the Maples room, The Vista, Spalding.

Peterborough Trades Union Council

The next meeting of PTUC is this Thursday 28th September, I will circulate a report, early next week, The EDL have announced that they plan to march in Peterborough on Saturday 21st October, PTUC will be organising a Unity Event as a counter protest. No details have been announced yet I will keep the committee up dated when I have further details.

PTUC are fully supportive of our Four Pillars Campaign and have offered help and assistance to the campaign.

I have held meetings with my counterparts Regionally in other unions and they have asked for information to pass to their members and were have their full support.

Burston Strike School

The Annual event to celebrate the longest strike in history took place on Sunday 3rd September, the CWU Eastern Region once again attended and set up a Four Pillars stall, Eastern Region Secretary Paul Moffat spoke at the event outlining the campaign.
