Branch Political Report 19th April

Branch Political Officers Report for Branch Committee Meeting 19th April 2016

European Referendum
The date has been set for the referendum it will take place on Thursday 23rd June, the campaigning officially started last week with both the In and Out campaigns starting their campaign.
Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party are backing the IN campaign and launched the Labour IN campaign, various unions have come out behind the Labour campaign, at the time of writing the CWU has not decided which way to recommend to its members. I expect that an announcement next week at conference.
I will be sending out an email to all members highlighting the Labour IN campaign and recommending they vote to stay IN.
Local Elections
As previously reported the local elections take place on Thursday 5th May, Carl Harper a CWU member from Peterborough Delivery Unit is standing for Labour in the Eye, Thorney and Newborough ward.
I received a request from Carl and the CLP for financial help to print leaflets; this was passed onto the finance committee which sanctioned a £250 donation for which I thank them. The leaflets have been printed and are in the process of being distributed in the ward by Carl and the other 2 Labour candidates.
North West Cambridgeshire CLP have contacted me regarding funding for 4 Labour candidates who are momentum members, I have passed this request onto the finance committee.
Whilst I agree with the aims and objectives of momentum there are a total 20 Labour candidates standing in 7 wards in NW Cambs, it is my belief that we must try and get as many of those 20 elected as possible.
Police and Crime Commissioners Elections
The PCC elections take place on Thursday 5th May the branch has made a donation of £200 to Dave Baigent the Labour candidate for Cambridgeshire; Dave has been out and about across the county campaigning. I joined him and the Labour local election candidates in the city centre last month to campaign.
I am trying to contact the other candidates in the branch.
Eastern Region Labour Party Board
Sue Lewis from CCTV and myself are the CWU representatives on the Eastern Region Board of the Labour Party, the board meets 4 times a year on a Saturday in Harlow.
Unfortunately I missed the 1st meeting of the year due to Annual Leave, I be submitting a report to both the branch and regional committee’s following these meetings.
South East Region TUC (SERTUC)
I have been nominated by the Region as one of the CWU representatives to sit on the SERTUC Regional Board; the board is made up of all the TUC affiliated unions in the East, London and South East.
These meetings take place 4 times a year on a Saturday at Congress House, London.
Peterborough Crown Office
As previously reported the Branch Office is to be franchised out to W.H. Smiths, the members in the office belong to Eastern 4, I have spoken to Eastern 4 about a joint leafleting session outside the office and in the city centre, this needs to be finalised hopefully I can meet up with Mark Tonner and the Counters Representative at conference next week and arrange this.
